io9 – Threequels Stink – Why?
Why Are Movie Threequels Always So Terrible?
By Charlie Jane Anders, 4:04 PM on Tue Jul 7 2009, 134 views

Movie sequels that don’t suck are rare creatures — like flying unicorns — but they do exist. But nobody’s ever been able to find an example of a third movie in a series that didn’t self-immolate. Why is that?
After yesterday’s list of sequels that don’t suck — and I still cling to RoboCop 2, although maybe I should watch it again — people asked for a list of threequels that do suck. Which seemed kind of pointless, because that would be the same as a complete list of threequels. Search For Spock? Sucked. Return Of The Jedi? Blew. Spider-Man 3? Superman III? RoboCop 3? X-Men 3? It’s making my head pound just to list them. Alien³?

Lifehacker – Aviary.com Creates Edit-Ready Web Screenshots – Image Editing

Aviary.com Creates Edit-Ready Web Screenshots
By Kevin Purdy, 4:30 AM on Wed Jul 1 2009
Looking to grab a copy of the entire scroll-able content of a web page? Aviary, makers of a previously mentioned online image editing tool and Firefox extension, make it really simple: just add the site’s URL after aviary.com/.
The speed with which Aviary’s Flash-based editor pops open depends on their server load and the content of the site you’re trying to paste over—Lifehacker is a “large image,” while aviary.com/xkcd.com loads just fine. But the full-length capture works, allows you to save to the desktop (through the “Export” function) and make basic edits like cropping and text and shape addition. Our initial tests showed some real lag, and a few failures, when trying to open the right-hand tools for “Advanced Editor” or “Image Effects” on larger web captures, but when they work, you’re getting a pretty neat Photoshop-lite to play with.
Aviary’s URL appending service is free to use, requires a free account to save images online and access certain advanced features.

Unbreakable Sequel-osity? (io9.com)
Could A Sequel To M. Night Shyalmalan’s Best Movie Still Happen?

By Charlie Jane Anders, 12:16 PM on Fri Jun 19 2009, 1,924 views
M. Night Shyamalan continues trying to scare us with evil vegetation and travesties of animated classics, while storytelling gold – a continuation of his superhero epic Unbreakable – goes untouched. But now Night says an Unbreakable sequel is still possible.
Shyamalan told reporters he’s still very interested in continuing that story of a superhuman Bruce Willis and his self-appointed nemesis, Samuel L. Jackson:
I don’t know where all the parties are in the world. Sam [Jackson] is like ‘Mr. Comic Book’ now. And Bruce, I don’t know what he’s up to. I don’t know where Disney’s at in their head and what kind of movies they’re up for making. But yeah, I love that movie.
Night says he’s also waiting for just the right story to pop into his head — or maybe just the right offer to come along? Jackson is reportedly interested in picking up where the last movie left off, so it’s just a matter of whether Willis can spare the time. [MTV]

A Rash of Bizarre UFO Abductions in Australia – Aliens
A Rash of Bizarre UFO Abductions in Australia
By Annalee Newitz, 2:07 PM on Wed Jun 17 2009, 4,151 views Edit post, Set to draft, Slurp

The inter-webs are buzzing with reports that countless people in Australia are claiming aliens abducted them and took them to some kind of medical facility over the Blue Mountains.
George, a bank manager in Sydney, Australia, told a reporter:
I had the window wide open and was lying in my bed next to it trying to get a cool breeze happening. I was drowsy but definitely not asleep. Then I began floating out my window and over Sydney. I wasn’t nervous but felt a bit surprised, like what the hell was happening. It was as if I had been sedated, thinking back. I saw the city pass by under or at least felt as if it was and then thought I might have been going over some bush or mountains.
I was on a platform and then on some kind of operating table in a chamber within a UFO, I think. I noticed odd ‘furniture’ in the room: if you could call it that- unusual spheres and pyramids. There were beings over me. They appeared to be wearing white robes or togas of some sort. I could not see their faces or any bodily features. Nothing in this UFO chamber looked human. What looked somewhat like a dental or baking instrument was then inserted into my backside and pulled out and put away.

‘Time Traveler’s Wife’ Trailer and Poster – RopeofSilicon.com Movie News, Trailers, Reviews and More
‘BY: Brad Brevet | June 12th 2009 at 5:24 PM
The trailer for the long delayed New Line Cinema release The Time Traveler’s Wife has finally arrived online in advance of its August 14 release date. The film stars Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana, the latter of which was actually the cause of the delay as the production had to wait for the star’s hair to grow back after his turn as a bald Romulan in Paramount’s Star Trek before filming a few reshoots.

Robert Schwentke Flightplan directed the film based on the bestselling novel by Audrey Niffenegger. Bana portrays a man with a time-traveling gene who manages to appear and re-appear at different times in the life of his one true love McAdams.
Along with the trailer a small version of the poster has also appeared online as you can see to the right. Hopefully we will have a full version soon as it actually is a rather appealing piece of art, but McAdams has that effect on me.

First Look at Mickey Rourke as Whiplash! – Superhero Hype!

USA Today and ScreenRant have published a first look at Mickey Rourke as villain Whiplash at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix in director Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2, opening in theaters on May 7, 2010. Rourke stars with Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Favreau, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Garry Shandling, John Slattery, Kate Mara and Clark Gregg in the sequel.
Whiplash sports a power pack on his chest that looks similar to the one used by Iron Man. “The technologies are definitely related, and that’s part of the core theme of the film,” says Favreau.
The character’s alter ego, Ivan Vanko, is a Russian who, Favreau says, “has constructed his own version of a suit.” Among the creative alterations: a pair of whips, powered by the suit’s glowing chest piece. Whiplash “is going to light them up,” says Rourke.

Futurama is BACK baby – Confirmed!
By Gary Susman, 4:30 PM on Tue Jun 9 2009, 1,041 views (Edit post, Set to draft, Slurp)

Confirming yesterday’s rumor, Entertainment Weekly’s Ausiello Files confirms that Comedy Central is reviving Futurama — and not just for 13 episodes, but for 26. In a jar somewhere, the disembodied head of Al Gore is smiling.
Citing the precedent of Family Guy, reanimated after cancellation due to its popularity in reruns and DVD sales, 20th Century Fox television told EW it was responding to a similar hunger for Matt Groening and David X. Cohen’s futuristic spoof. “Futurama was another series that fans simply demanded we bring back,” said 20th Century Fox TV Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden in a press release, “and we couldn’t have been happier when Matt and David agreed that there were many more stories yet to tell.” Groening chimed in with a statement, saying, “”We’re thrilled Futurama is coming back. We now have only 25,766 episodes to make before we catch up with Bender and Fry in the year 3000.” The new Futurama episodes will air in 2010, so that gives Groening and Cohen 990 years to go.
